Gary has had his fair share of ups and downs since he first appeared on the famous cobbles in 2008, but four years ago, he got himself into a whole new world of trouble after killing and burying Rick Neelan (Greg Wood).
He went on to keep his murderous act a secret for four years, before Rick’s ex ended up taking the blame prior to her death from cancer.
Now, daughter Kelly (Millie Gibson) has been made aware of the truth and wanted revenge, hiring a hitman to give Gary his comeuppance and finish him off once and for all (before backtracking and realising that wasn’t what she wanted).
Speaking on Friday’s This Morning ahead of the final showdown between his and Millie’s characters before she says goodbye to the ITV soap, Mikey revealed how viewer reactions to Gary have changed over the years.
‘Your character, Gary, is like the resident bad boy, but I think you’re the bad boy it’s ok to like,’ presenter Dermot O’Leary began.
‘Yeah, when I first joined the show he was more of an out and out bad boy, but he’s definitely softened over the years and hopefully he’s become a more likeable chap to be around,’ Mikey replied.
‘All this trouble that he gets himself into, I think he does for the right reasons to start off with, but it just ends up with burying bodies.’
Alison Hammond chimed in and asked if Mikey is forced to ‘defend his character’ on the streets when avid viewers of the show confront him.
‘I think you sort of have to,’ Mikey began. ‘People are just asking when I’ve leaving or when I’m gonna get caught, that’s when I’ve got to try and defend myself.’
‘But it’s definitely got easier over the years. When I first started, people would try and fight me in the streets. I guess I was younger back then, but it’s definitely got easier as I’ve got older’, he added, and who could forget Gary’s early days as a troublemaker and his constant scraps with neighbour David Platt (Jack P Shepherd)?
In tense scenes airing tonight, the long-running storyline will finally come to a head, with 18-year-old Millie’s exit revealed.
With a rooftop showdown and gunshot confirmed, will Millie’s attempt to destroy Gary massively backfire?
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
Coronation Street airs tonight at 8pm on ITV.
